Back up your whole TPT store,
with an AI doing the clicking.

Step-by-step guide  ·  TPT Seller Guides

After the October Town Hall, a few sellers asked me the same quiet question: how do I get a copy of everything in my store, just in case? Not because they plan to leave, but because the store is years of work and right now it only fully exists in one place.

So I tried it on my own store: 46 listings, including bundles, freebies and a few old inactive ones. Clicking through every Edit page by hand would take an afternoon. Instead I let an AI do the clicking in my browser, and it saved each listing in about ten seconds. This guide is the tested version of that, with everything you need to do the same.

How do I download all my products from TPT?

There is no single button or export for it. TPT lets you download each product file from its Edit page, one at a time, but your descriptions, thumbnails, previews and listing details have no download option at all. An AI assistant that can use your browser can visit every listing for you and save all of it, so the whole store ends up on your own computer.

Why back up your TPT store

Your original files are probably already on your computer. What often isn't: the description you rewrote five times, the thumbnails, the preview PDF, the grades and tags you picked, and which products go in which bundle. If you ever want to sell somewhere else as well, or rebuild a listing, that is exactly the part you would need.

It is also simply good practice. TPT's own terms of service say that if an account is closed, you no longer have access to your “uploaded Resources.” Nobody expects that to happen. A backup just means you never have to think about it. If you are working through the new AI policy and planning to replace covers or descriptions, a copy of the current versions is handy too.

What you end up with

One folder per listing, in a TPT Store Backup folder inside your Documents. Here's an example from my store of what each folder holds. Yours will have your own product names.

A product folder

17624365 - Sports Betting & Gambling Apps

  • Your descriptionWith its formatting and links, plus a plain-text copydescription.html, description.txt
  • Your listing detailsPrice, multiple-license price, grades, subjects, tags, pages and answer keydetails.txt
  • Your thumbnailsAll of them, full sizethumbnails folder
  • Your previewThe preview PDF buyers seepreview folder
  • Your product fileThe file buyers downloadproduct-file folder

A bundle folder

16154220 - Full Digital Citizenship Curriculum Bundle

  • Your descriptionWith its formatting and links, plus a plain-text copydescription.html, description.txt
  • Your listing detailsPrice, grades and tags, plus the list of products in the bundledetails.txt
  • Your thumbnailsAll of them, full sizethumbnails folder

A bundle has no product file or preview of its own, because those are saved with each product in it. Inactive listings are included too.

What you need

  • A paid Claude plan. The Pro plan is enough, and one month will do (see below). Free AI plans can't use your browser, and that goes for Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini alike.
  • The Google Chrome browser.
  • About ten minutes per 50 listings. You can do other things while it runs.

Please read the small print at the end before you start.

No Claude plan yet? One month is enough

You don't need a long subscription for this. Claude Pro costs $20 for one month (plus tax where it applies), and you can cancel straight after your backup.

  • Sign up on the Claude pricing page and choose monthly billing. The yearly option charges $200 up front.
  • Do your backup.
  • Cancel when you're done: in Claude, click your name at the bottom left, then Settings, Billing, Cancel. You keep Pro until the end of the month you paid for. Cancel at least a day before it renews to avoid a second charge.
  • If Claude says you've hit your usage limit, that's normal on Pro with a big store. Wait until it resets (Claude tells you when), then type continue.

For about the price of a few of your resources, you get a complete copy of years of work.

1Get ready (five minutes)

  • Add Claude to Chrome. Go to the Claude in Chrome page, click Add to Chrome, and log in with your Claude account. Then click the puzzle piece at the top right of Chrome and pin Claude, so its icon stays in your toolbar.
  • Log in to TPT in the same Chrome.
  • Choose the smallest model. If the Claude panel lets you pick a model, choose Haiku. I ran my whole store on it without problems, and it uses the least of your plan.
  • Know about one Chrome question. After the first listing, Chrome asks whether teacherspayteachers.com may download multiple files. Click Allow. The question pops up near the top left of the window, in your browser's language.

2Start the backup

Go to any TPT page, click the Claude icon in your toolbar to open the Claude panel, paste the instructions below, and press Enter.

Download it as a text file

The instructions are long because they include a small piece of code that does the saving. It's there in plain sight, so anyone can check what it does. Here is what happens next:

  • Claude makes a list of all your listings.
  • It opens each listing in turn and saves everything in it. You'll see the files appear in your Downloads.
  • Every 10 listings it tells you how far along it is. After 50 it pauses: type continue to do the next 50.
  • You don't have to do it all in one go. Stop whenever you like and paste the instructions again later, even days later, in the same Chrome. It remembers which listings are done and carries on from there.

While Claude works, keep Chrome open with your TPT tab in front. Don't click around in that tab, switch to other tabs or minimise Chrome. You're welcome to step away from your computer.

It only looks, it never changes anything

The instructions tell Claude never to click Save, Delete or anything similar, never to type anything into your listings, and to stop and ask you if anything unexpected pops up.

Claude may ask permission to use Chrome and to open teacherspayteachers.com. Click Allow.

When Claude says it's done, go straight on to step 3.

3Sort the files into folders

Your backup isn't finished until you do this step. When Claude is done, all the files are loose in your Downloads folder, mixed together. The sorter puts them into one folder per listing. It only touches the backup files and leaves your other downloads alone.

On Windows

  1. Click the button above to download the sorter.
  2. Open your Downloads folder and double-click the sorter.
  3. Windows may show a blue “Windows protected your PC” screen, because the sorter is a downloaded file. Click More info, then Run anyway. (Chrome may also ask whether to keep the download: choose Keep.)
  4. A window shows its progress and opens your backup folder when it's done.

On a Mac

  1. Click the button above to download the sorter.
  2. Open Terminal: press Command and Space together, type Terminal, and press Return.
  3. Type bash and a space. Don't press Return yet.
  4. Drag the sorter from your Downloads folder into the Terminal window, then press Return.

An honest note: I don't own a Mac, so I couldn't test the Mac sorter on one myself. If you run into anything, please tell me through the Get in touch button at the bottom right of this page, and I'll fix it.

If the sorter shows a message

  • “Files are open in another program”: close that program (usually Adobe Acrobat) and run the sorter again.
  • “Some files did not arrive”: see If something doesn't go to plan below.
  • “Still in progress”: Chrome is still downloading. Wait a minute and run it again.

Full backup with the Claude app

If you have the Claude app on your computer, it can do the backup and the sorting in one go, so you don't need the sorter.

  • Do step 1 first. Once Claude is added to Chrome, the app can use your Chrome.
  • Paste the app version of the instructions into a new chat in the app. It's the same as above, plus the sorting.
  • Click Allow when it asks. It asks to use Chrome, to open teacherspayteachers.com, and to “use 2 folders on your computer” (your Downloads and Documents).
  • It sorts after every 50 listings and tells you if any listing is missing a file.
Download it as a text file

One thing to know: with the app, your files pass through Anthropic's servers (the company behind Claude) while they are being sorted. The app tells you this when it asks for your folders. If you'd rather keep everything on your own computer, use steps 1 to 3 above instead.

Quick backup: descriptions, details and thumbnails

If you already have your product files and previews, this is all you need. It skips the files, so it's much faster: my 46 listings took under three minutes. It works in the Claude panel in Chrome and in the Claude app.

  • Do step 1 first.
  • Go to your My Products page on TPT, open Claude, paste the quick instructions below, and press Enter.
  • Claude saves your listings in small groups, about half a minute each, and tells you how far along it is. It stays on the My Products page the whole time.
  • When it's done, you get one zip file in your Downloads. Unzip it (Windows: right-click, Extract All. Mac: double-click). Inside is a folder for each listing, with its description, details and thumbnails, plus a spreadsheet called All listings with every listing and its description on one row.
Download it as a text file

No sorter needed. Inactive listings and the products inside your bundles are included.

As with the full backup, keep Chrome open with your TPT tab in front while it works. The quick backup doesn't remember its progress between sessions: if you close the tab before it's finished, just start it again.

If something doesn't go to plan

  • Adobe Acrobat opens by itself. If you have Acrobat Reader, it sometimes opens a preview PDF as soon as it downloads. That's harmless. Just close Acrobat before you run the sorter.
  • Claude stopped halfway. Paste the instructions again. It continues where it left off.
  • A listing is missing a file. The sorter names it. In the same Claude chat, type: “Please back up the listing [name] again.” Then run the sorter once more.

What a backup can't take with you

  • Reviews and ratings. Screenshot the ones you're proud of. They're useful social proof anywhere.
  • Followers and buyer contacts. TPT doesn't share buyer emails, so an email list of your own is the only way to stay in touch outside TPT.
  • Sales history. Export your sales reports from the seller dashboard separately. The before December 31 checklist lists other exports worth saving while you are at it.
  • Easel activities and Google Drive links. Easel can't be exported. If a product is a PDF with links to Google Slides or Docs, make sure you own copies of those files in your own Drive.

Cleaning up afterwards

While it works, the backup keeps a small to-do list in Chrome. Once you're done, paste this into the Claude panel to remove it:

Please go to https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/My-Products in my Chrome and run this line with your JavaScript tool. It removes the TPT backup kit from my browser. Don't click or change anything else. ['tptKit', 'tptQueue', 'tptDone'].forEach(k => localStorage.removeItem(k)); 'Backup kit removed'

Then open one or two product files from your backup to check they work.

Common questions

How do I download all my product descriptions from TPT?
Use the quick backup. It saves every description, with its formatting, plus a spreadsheet with all your listings and their descriptions in one place.

Can I download my own product files from TPT?
Yes. Each listing's Edit page has a download link for its file. The full backup goes through all of them for you and saves the previews too.

Will backing up change anything in my TPT store?
No. The instructions only let Claude look at your listings and start downloads. It never saves, edits or deletes anything.

How long does a TPT store backup take?
The full backup takes about ten minutes per 50 listings. The quick backup takes a few minutes for a whole store.

Does the backup include my reviews?
No. TPT keeps reviews with your store, so screenshot the ones you want to keep.

ChatGPT and Gemini

I've tested this with Claude only. ChatGPT and Gemini can use a browser on their paid plans too, but they work differently, and I don't want to publish steps I haven't tried myself. I'm working on a ChatGPT version and will add it here once it's tested.

The small print

I share this guide, the instructions and the sorters for free, as they are, to help fellow sellers. I tested them carefully on my own store, but every store and computer is different, and AI tools can make mistakes. You use them at your own risk. I can't be held responsible for any loss, damage or problems with your TPT account, your files or your computer that come from using them. Check that your backup is complete before you rely on it.
